Wine
Torbreck The Laird is a Shiraz from the Barossa Valley's famed Gnadenfrei Vineyard, planted in 1958 with one of the Barossa's original Shiraz clones. In Scotland 'The Laird' is the lord of the manor: a fitting name for the winery's flagship.
Every great wine has its roots in the terroir of a great vineyard. Originally owned by Malcolm Seppelt, the Gnadenfrei Vineyard sits on the south facing slope of a ridge separating Seppeltsfield and Marananga.
The Shiraz grows in very dark, heavy clay loam over red friable clay. The vineyard is meticulously hand tended, unirrigated and traditionally farmed. It consistently produces small, concentrated Shiraz berries.
The handpicked grapes are destemmed to both wooden and concrete open fermenters. After 6-7 days on skins, with twice daily pump overs, the wine is drained and basket pressed to a stainless steel tank to complete fermentation.
The wine is then sent to 100 per cent new Dominique Laurent French oak barriques to mature for 36 months prior to blending. Bottling occurs without fining or filtration. The wine ages a further 24 months in bottle before release.
Deep purple garnet, Torbreck The Laird is a superb example of Barossa Valley Shiraz. It has intense dark fruit flavours in perfect balance with earthy spices and firm tannins. The finish is exceptionally long. Cellaring potential is 20+ years.
